February 6, 2022 Dear Parents and Students of CUSD #1 I wanted to update you on the ongoing litigation of Mask Mandates in Illinois schools. On Friday, Sangamon County Judge Grischow issued a Temporary Restraining Order in response to a lawsuit filed by more than 700 parents across the state that challenged state-mandated COVID-19 mitigations. CUSD #1 is not a named participant in the lawsuit. With that in mind, the Board of Education, with information provided by our attorney, has chosen to “pause” the enforcement of the mask mandate until the Appellate Court, or any other legal entity with authority may rule otherwise. CUSD #1 schools will be “Mask Optional” starting Monday February 7, 2022. The district will continue to provide masks for any student wishing to wear one. Please keep in mind that Federal Law mandates that masks must be worn while riding on school transportation. We are doing our best to navigate these trying legal times while at the same time providing a safe environment for your children. With all these issues in mind, please remember that our primary goal is to provide a quality education for our students, and we are committed to make that happen. Should circumstances change, and they may change quickly, I will keep you updated as soon as any additional information becomes available. Thank you for your understanding.
