INTRODUCTION TO FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCE at Waverly

Prerequisite: 9th Grade or above
A course designed to introduce students to all areas of home
economics and serve as a background for all vocational home economics
programs. This composite course is designed to present basic subject
matter in four areas:
1) Clothing and Textiles
2) Resource Management
3) Housing, Furnishings, and Equipment
5) Human Development, Interpersonal and Family
(Students will be expected to pay a minimal fee to cover the costs
of constructing a garment.)
ADULT LIVING at Waverly
HEC 220
Length of course: 1 semester
Credit: 1/2 unit
prerequisite: 10- 12th grade
This course is designed to assist individuals and families in achieving life satisfaction through responsible participation as adults in home, community and workplace. Emphasis is placed on the development of prevention strategies which will assist individuals in responding to situations in terms of their identified values and goals. The course content includes the following duty areas: developing short and long-range plans, demonstrating goal-setting and decision making skills; evaluating and adapting basic needs to assume roles and responsibilities; recognizing and following health practices that assist in coping, selecting and using resources to enhance individual growth and development; developing effective relationships to promote communication with others; and evaluating family and career changes as to the impact on individuals.
HOUSING AND LIVING ENVIRONMENTS at Waverly

Prerequisite: 10- 12th grade
Learning experiences are designed to provide students with the basic knowledge and skills needed to select, acquire, maintain and manage living environments that meet the need of the occupants. The selection and care of housing and furnishings are related to factors such as social-economic conditions, individual tastes, psychological effects, aesthetic values, safety, sanitation and energy conservation. The course content includes the following duty areas: locating and managing housing using goal-setting and decision making skills; evaluating living space to meet basic needs; creating and maintaining living environments; ensuring health and safety; selecting appropriate resources in creating living environments; applying housing and home management choices relating to changing family/individual and career patterns. Emphasis will be placed on the application of basic management principles as they relate to the environment. Home decorating, art principles and floor plans are studied and projects in this class area provide practical experience.
CHILD DEVELOPMENT at Waverly
HEC 210
Length of course: 1 semester
Credit: 1/2 unit
Prerequisites: 10-12th grade
Child development is a course for students who like to work with preschoolers. It is designed to provide students with information and practical experiences needed for job-related competencies in a child care occupations career. Students will be provided with lab experience in a school-based nursery group. The major learning experiences will involve actual work with the child and preparation for that activity.
PARENTING at Waverly
HEC 240
Length of course: 1 semester

This course is designed to help students think through the responsibilities, satisfaction, and stresses of parenthood by examining many types of parenting situations. Stress prevention and management and the work of community agencies that help parents deal with various types of parenting crises are emphasized. This course content includes the following duty areas: managing and organizing parenting by applying decision making and goal setting skills; applying basis principles of the parenting process; practicing health and safety standards as related to parenting; providing experiences which encourage parents and children to maximize resources; encouraging human relation skills children/adolescents; and evaluating impact of parenting on family and career changes. Special attention is given to the needs of teenage parents and to the importance of readiness for parenthood.
CLOTHING At Waverly

Prerequisite: 10- 12th grade
This course is planned to provide students opportunities to develop knowledge and understanding of textiles, fashions, and fabrics and to assist them in meeting the clothing and fabric (fashion) product needs of themselves, families, and/or general public. The course content centers around developing student competencies in the following duty areas:
A. Selecting clothing and textiles using goal-making skills
B. Meeting social, physical, psychological and economical needs
in evaluating, selecting, and caring for clothing and textiles.
C. Appraising clothing and textiles products which contribute
health, safety, and comfort
D. Maximizing resources in selecting, constructing, altering,
repairing, and remodeling clothing/textiles products.
E. Communicating intended clothing images to others, styles that
are in and out
F. Modeling and poise for teens.
G. Construction of two garments using the proper sewing equipment,
techniques, and processing equipment.

FOODS AND NUTRITION I at Waverly

Prerequisite: 10- 12th grade
Foods and Nutrition I is designed to meet the needs of students
in modern day living. It offers comprehensive coverage of many
aspects of food. The purposes are to help students develop knowledge
and skills in food preparation; plan nutritionally sound and appetizing
meals; know principles of cookery as applied to food preparation
and understand their relationships to the production of standard
products; develop the ability to apply nutrition principles to
food selection and to understand the relationship of nutrition
to growth and personal development; to broaden the scope of food
study and promote a deeper appreciation of food; and career development
in the area of food service.

Foods and Nutrition II course is designed to encourage an interest in the importance of good nutrition throughout the life cycle; to develop an understanding and appreciation of a variety of foods; to strengthen decision making in choice, storage, and preparation of foods of all types; to encourage food management practices in the kitchen which will lead to conservation of food, time, money and energy; to provide ways in which cookery skills will help students to develop the ability to:
A. Identify and use tools of cookery to promote efficiency,
to take care of tools and equipment, and to avoid waste of resources.
B. Develop management techniques that will conserve time ,energy,money
and food resources.
C. Develop a creative interest in the selection and preparation
off all kinds of foods.
D. Know and appreciate the wide range of opportunities that are
available in the food service industry.
