PURPOSE: The purpose of this lesson plan is to teach junior high band students to research a music topic on the Internet.

UNIT: Music Research Paper

THEME: Use the Internet to gather information on band pieces.

OBJECTIVES:

1. To use technology to do research for a paper.

2. To understand how to write a research paper on one of the band pieces selected.

PROCEDURES/ACTIVITIES:

1. Students select (for research) one of the music pieces the band is working on (Can-Can, I Want to Hold Your Hand, One of Those Songs, or William Tell Overture).

2. Teacher will take junior high band class to computer lab, and monitor students while they do research on Internet.

3. Teacher will set up date deadlines for note cards, outline, rough draft, first and final drafts.

4. Students will work on project during class time, and on their own time.

5. Final draft will be typed using Microsoft Word. Teacher will demonstrate and monitor students.

MATERIALS:

1. computers in computer lab

2. paper, note cards

3. printed copies of research off the internet

TIME: four weeks.

EVALUATION: Teacher will grade papers based on pre-set rubric created by the class.
