PURPOSE: The purpose of this lesson plan is to teach fifth grade students about the various instruments, and how they are grouped into families. It is also a stepping-stone to encouraging students to join the beginner band.

UNIT: Instrument Families

THEME: Categorizing various instruments

OBJECTIVES: 1. To identify all instruments introduced in this unit by sight and sound. 2. To categorize the instruments into the correct families.

PROCEDURES/ACTIVITIES:

1. Teacher presents PowerPoint on instrument families to introduce unit.

2. Students look at pictures of instruments in their books, and listen to CD that highlights each instrument individually, a concert band, and an orchestra.

3. Teacher will show various band instruments, and allow students to experiment with them.

MATERIALS:

1. PowerPoint slide show

2. student music books

3. CDs

4. band instruments

TIME: two weeks

EVALUATION: written test.

1. Put instruments in correct families.

2. Listen to music. Decide what groups of instruments are playing: woodwinds, concert band, orchestra, etc.
