Student Outcome:
1. Students
practice research skills gathering the highest and lowest points on each
continent.
2. Students
use the Excel program to enter data collected from research and create graphs.
3. Students
answer written and oral questions about the graph.
State Standards:
Materials:
Data
paper for research
Text
books, encyclopedia, and Internet available the research
Computer
for each student
Worksheet
with questions about the graph created in class
Time:
1
class period
10 minutes for
explanation of class and power point-Let’s Make Graphs
20 minutes for research
50 minutes for computer time
Method:
1. Show class several computer generated graphs as examples to be used for the science fair. Explain to class they will be practicing research for Earth Science and use the information for creating a graph.
2. Show power point presentation as an overview of the class.
3. Divide class into 7 groups and have each group find the highest and lowest points on each continent.
4. Each group shares their results with the rest of the class and each student fills in his/her data organizer
Go to the computer lab:
1. Students
open Excel program
2. Show
the power point presentation 1 slide at a time and have students follow along
with the practice.
3. Students
print the graph they created of the highest points on Earth.
4. At
the end of the power point/practice time allow students to create a graph on
the lowest points on their own
Assignment:
Students
answer questions on a worksheet about the highest points.
Evaluation:
Students must print off 1 graph of the highest points on each continent and turn in worksheet on highest points.
