For this lesson students will gather data, find
the percent of each piece of the data, and then construct a circle graph with
this data. We will then use Excel to
input the same data and construct a circle graph on the computer.
Part 1: Classroom
§
Have students gather data with their own class
as a whole group (some examples of data to gather may be: favorite type of fries- curly, skinny, fat,
chili, cheese or favorite type of movie-scary, romantic, comedy, action)
§
Next have students gather data in other nearby
classrooms, with different groups going to different classrooms (arrange this
ahead of time with your neighboring teachers) I have students start working
with a partner at this point
§
Compile the data in one big chart -either on an
overhead or on the board
§
Students will need to find the total number of
students surveyed
§
Divide the number for each set of data by the
total number of students surveyed
§
Change that decimal to a percent (some rounding
may have to take place, but make sure at the end that the percentages round up
to 100%- if not, make adjustments)
§
A circle contains a total of 360 degrees
§
Use the percentages for each set of
data-multiply the percent times 360 to find out how many degrees needed for
each set of data
§
Draw a circle with the compass
§
Draw a radius on the circle
§
Use the radius to make the first section of the
circle graph- use the number of degrees calculated above and a protractor to
measure the number of degrees and make an angle that size to form the first
section
§
Label and color that section
§
Continue with the same procedure until all of
the data is graphed
Part 2: Computer Lab
1. Students will open Excel program
§ Students will work with their partner and share a computer making sure each person gets a turn on the computer
2. Input the data
§ Students will enter the type of data in column A (ex. Curly fries, Skinny fries, etc.)
§ Students will enter the percentages for each set of data in Column B
|
Curly fries |
25 |
|
Skinny fries |
25 |

Fat fries |
10 |
|
Cheese fries |
30 |

Chili fries |

§
Highlight all of the data in both columns
§
Click on Chart Wizard (It looks like a tiny bar
graph in the tool bar)
§
Choose Pie Chart, Select the type of Pie Chart
(preferably the one dimensional chart-so it looks more like their chart), and
then Next
§
Click on Next again (this section not needed)
§
Click on Titles tab and give your chart a name
(example: Favorite Types of Fries at FJHS)
§
Click on Legend tab and decide where you want
the legend located
§
Click on Data labels tab and click on show
percent
§
Click on Next, click on As a New Sheet
§
Click on Finish

§
Print your graph and compare it with your
hand-made graph
