Lesson Plan

Teacher: Mrs. D. Roberts

Course:  Geometry    Unit: Transformations

Lesson Title:  Tessellations

 Grade level:  7th grade

Date of Lesson: February 12 & 14, 2002 (This lesson will take two class periods)

Which Performance Descriptor(s) are you focusing on in this lesson:

Standard 9A-Stage E-Create regular and semi-regular tessellations using pattern blocks, other

manipulatives, or technology to tile a plane

Stage F-Describe sizes, positions, and orientations of shapes under transformations

Stage G-Draw transformations of figures in a plane to match specified criteria

Stage H-Analyze properties of a shape or a combination of shapes that enable it to

tessellate a plane

1st Day

ü      Discuss transformations of a plane-demonstrate on a graph- a translation/slide, a reflection/flip and a rotation/turn.  Focus on the translation because that is the transformation we will be using to create a tessellation

ü      Show and discuss art work of M.C. Escher and how he uses tessellations

ü      Show examples of tessellations (student work from previous school years)

ü      Demonstrate with an overhead how to use a two-inch square to make a slide pattern (an angel fish) that will tessellate a plane –students should be provided with a two inch square and scissors so that they can follow along and also make the slide pattern*

ü      Students will then create their own slide pattern to use to tessellate a plane

ü      Provide students with a two inch square cut from a poster board and an 8 ½ by 11 sheet of paper for this project (I advise that students practice on two inch squares cut from notebook paper until they get a shape that will tessellate before you give them the poster board square)

2nd Day

ü      Students will share their tessellations with the class

ü      Provide students with step-by-step directions** on making tessellations using HyperStudio

ü      Use computer/TV connection to demonstrate how to create tessellations using HyperStudio.  Students should follow along on the sheet of directions.  Have them read each direction aloud and then demonstrate that step.  Continue in this manner until tessellation is created

ü      Show students some examples created with the program (create these ahead of time)

ü       Go to the computer lab and let students create a tessellation of their own (using their step-by step directions as needed.

* To create an angel fish.

1.        Cut out a two-inch square

2.        Cut a piece out of the right side of the square that resembles the nose of a fish and slide it straight across the square to the left side.  Do not flip it or turn it.  Tape it in place.

3.        Cut a piece from the bottom of the square that resembles the top fin of an angel fish.  Slide this piece straight up to the top of the square.  Do not flip it or turn it.  Tape it in place.

4.        The result should look like an angel fish.  Add eyes, fins, and scales to finish the fish.

** Step-by step directions to make tessellations with HyperStudio.  (These directions were adapted from the website - Math Forum:  Suzanne’s HyperStudio Tips)

ü       Open HyperStudio

ü       Make a new stack (click on the top box in the stack of boxes or go to File, New Stack – then click on YES)

ü       Go to:  File, Save As, and give your new stack a name (ex.  tessellation)

ü       Go to:  Tools and click on the rectangle tool (Looks like a square/solid lines on the sides)

ü       Use the rectangle tool to draw a square.  If the Shift key is held down as the rectangle is drawn, it will make a square

ü       Go to: Tools and click on the paint bucket, then click on Colors and choose a color.  Click inside of your square to give it a color.  It is important that you remember exactly what color you chose.

ü       Go to:  Tools and click on the lasso tool (looks like a rope lasso)

ü       Using the lasso, start at the top corner, wiggle around as you are going down and exit the lower corner of the square.  Continue to make a circle and connect it to the top corner again.  Dotted lines will appear around the section that you selected.

ü       Hold the Shift key down and slide the chunk over to the right side of the square (or the left depending on which side you chose to lasso)  Don’t overlap and don’t leave any gaps.

ü       Repeat this process by moving a piece from the top to the bottom or bottom to the top.

ü       Go to:  Tools and click on the paint brush tool or pencil tool, then click on a contrasting color and give your shape a design with one or both tools and several colors

ü       Go to: Lasso tool and make a big circle around your shape.  It should have blinking lines around the whole shape.  It is very important that you keep those blinking lines around your shape.

ü       Go to: Edit, Copy

ü       Go to: Edit, Paste

ü       Click on top of your shape, hold down the mouse and move the shape away from the original shape.

ü       Your can now change the color of the shape by going to: Edit, Effects, Replace Colors.  Choose the original color and a replacement color and click on OK (You can also change the color by using the bucket tool and just clicking your shape with a new color)

ü       Once you have the colors adjusted, lasso one of the shapes and slide over to the other.

ü       Lasso the whole thing (both shapes together) and then go to:  File, Copy, File, Paste again and move the shape over.  Repeat until you have a whole line of shapes.  Lasso that whole thing and File, Copy, File, Paste and move it down.

ü       Repeat Copy, Paste, Move until whole page is filled up.
