Lesson Plan
EDAD 518

7th grade Study
Skills class
Purpose: Allow students to create graphs using EXCELL. Allow students to determine labels needed
for each graph according to problems in the math text.
Unit: Interpreting Data
Theme: Graphs and their Information
Objective:
1.
All
students will be able to create a bar graph, line graph, and a scatter plot
using given information.
2.
All
students will be able to successfully use EXCELL to create these graphs.
3.
Students
will become more aware what computers can do for them in a scholarly manner.
Performance
Descriptors:
5A7g Arrange information in an orderly manner.
8B Interpret and describe numerical
relationships using tables, graphs, and symbols.
1B4g Demonstrate understanding of structure
through the use of graphic organizers.
10A1f Construct, read, interpret, infer, predict,
draw conclusions, and evaluate data from various displays, including circle
graphs.
Student
Activities:
The
students will have already studied the different types of graphs (bar, line,
multi-line, double bar, histogram, scatter plot). This will be a culminating activity at the end of the unit.
1.
Students
as a class will review the different graphs.
2.
Each
student will create one bar graph, a line graph, and a scatter plot according
to the problems assigned from the Math textbook. The students will use the program of EXCELL that they are
somewhat familiar with from Math and Science class.
3.
The
students will go to the computer lab and create these graphs and print a copy. They will need to make decisions on the
labels, titles, and what information is needed for each graph.

Time
Limit:
One
class period of 85 minutes (if more time is needed by slower students time will
be given)
Procedures:
Students
will meet in the classroom first.
Instructions will be given about how to begin and to sign in at the
computer lab.
Then
we will go to the computer lab and each student will be assigned a computer.
They
will work at their own speed; however, the three graphs need to be done during
this class period or they will need to make arrangements for computer time in
my classroom.
Evaluation
of Students:
1.
Students
will be evaluated on each of the three graphs created.
2.
They
will also receive points according to computer classroom etiquette.
