Purpose:  Introduce students to Norman Rockwell and his work.

Unit:  Art In Your World

Theme:  Understanding point of view in works of art

Objectives:

1.     All students will be familiar with Norman Rockwell and his works of art.

2.     All students will be able to look at a work of art and describe the point of view.

Performance Descriptors:

26B2f  Create a realistic 2-D art work.

25A4f  Locate contrast in a 2-D art work (e.g. light to dark, big to small)

Student Activities:

1.     Students would examine the picture in student textbook on page xvi.  Discuss what is seen.  Have students list the items that they see.  Question as to why students believe Norman Rockwell painted his triple portrait in three different ways.

2.     View power point to introduce Norman Rockwell.  Students have copies of power point screens to write notes.  The power point will inform the students about when and where Rockwell lived and worked.  Several of his pictures will be included for the students to examine.  Each will be discussed as to Rockwell’s sense of humor and his idea of Americana.

3.     Examine pictures from calendars and posters.  Point out the picture of Tom Sawyer and Becky lost in the cave.  Inform the 6th graders that when they go on their field trip in May they will go by the very spot where this was sketched.  Rockwell actually did go into the cave and sketch by candlelight.  From his sketch he painted this picture.

4.     Rockwell painted what he saw in ordinary life in a humorous manner.  He didn’t always paint exactly what he saw and how he saw it.

5.     Keeping this in mind students are to sketch one of their shoes from the point of view from an ant.

6.     Students are to sketch one of their shoes from the point of view from a giant.

7.     Write a paragraph explaining how these two sketches are different.  Why should they be different?

Resources:

Student textbook  Exploring Art copyright1992

Power point presentation

Posters and pictures by Norman Rockwell

Sketchpads and pencils

Their shoe

Time Limit:

One class period of 85 minutes with students writing the paragraph as homework

Evaluation:

1.     Students will be evaluated on their sketches.  The criterion is if there is a definite difference between the two sketches according to the point of view.

2.     Students will be evaluated on their paragraph analyzing their sketches.  The analysis should include the idea that a giant would look down on the shoe and the ant would look up at the shoe.  Grammar and mechanics would be corrected but not evaluated.

3.     Students will be evaluated on the retention of knowledge of Norman Rockwell on the chapter 1 test.
