Unit or Theme:
_Elements of Art, grade 5-6_________________
Objectives: _The
students will be able to identify and demonstrate their
knowledge of the Elements of Art, and be able to apply this
knowledge to
reproductions done by artists in the past.
State Standards Met:
25.A.2d, 26.A.2e, 27.B.2
Art Materials needed:
Oil pastels, white drawing paper 12" x 18",
pencil, ruler, and stencils
Resources: Power
Point Presentation on the Elements of Art,
Reproductions of various famous paintings, and Elements of Art posters
(on the different cabinets).
Time: approx. 4- 40
minute sessions
Procedure-Steps:
1. Show Power Point
Presentation on the Elements of Art
2. Get in table
groups (Ex: blue paintbrush table, blue paint table)
Give each group a famous reproduction of a painting. Have the group
describe (on paper) the painting based on the Elements of
Art, as a group
share in front of the whole class.
3. The students will
create their own samples of the Elements of Art
using a 12" x 18" sheet of white paper, and
dividing it into 8 sections
by folding it.
4. In each rectangle
put one Element of Art using oil pastel and in the
last rectangle combine three elements. Label each rectangle
on the back
of your paper. Make
sure to fill the entire rectangle!
Culmination of Lesson:
After group discussions, students will create a
12" x 18" oil pastel composition based on the
Elements of Art, which will
be displayed in the hallway.
Evaluation: The
composition will be worth 40 pts.(each rectangle being
worth 5 pts.)
a. Fill in the rectangle = 1 pt.
b.
The correct element, neatly done = 2 pts.
c.
Element correctly labeled on the back = 2 pts.
