                                     LESSON  1

                              FIFTH GRADE SCIENCE

                                      ELECTRICITY

LESSON OBJECTIVES:

1.      Produce electric current by friction (experiment).

2.      Describe how electric charges affect protons and electrons.

3.      Describe some effects of an imbalance of charge.

STATE GOALS:

1.    12.C.2a—Describe and compare types of energy including

                      electrical.

2.    13.A.2a—Demonstrate ways to avoid injury when con-

                      ducting science activities.

3.    11.A.2b—Collect data for investigations using scientific

                      process skills.

MATERIALS:    Computer with AVerKey for power point

presentation.  Science equipment for static elect-

ricity— goggles, balloons, string, plastic stick,

                             and wool material. Textbook-Module E

PROCEDURE:  1.  Begin lesson with power point on the material

in students’ science books (pgs. E4-E17).

                                  Discuss electrical terms and concepts.

2.      Students perform a static electricity experiment

by rubbing a plastic stick and touching the balloons—showing the repelling of like charges and the attracting of unlike charges.

EVALUATION:  Students will complete a lab sheet while

                             performing experiment.  Also, performance

assessment at end of unit study.
