                                           FIFTH GRADE READING

                                      “The Yangs’ First Thanksgiving”

 

LESSON OBJECTIVES:

1.      Students will compare and contrast two or more things to tell               how they’re alike and different.

2.      Use context clues to determine the meanings of mutiple-meaning words.

 

STATE GOALS:

1.      1.B.2a—Establish purpose for reading; survey materials; ask

       questions; make predictions; connect, clarify and extend

       ideas.

2.      1.C.2c –Compare and contrast the content and organization of

       selections.

3.      2.A.2b—Describe how literary elements are used in literature

 to create meaning.

 

MATERIALS:  Reading textbook- Scott Foresman , computer and  Audio CD 4.

 

PROCEDURE:  Begin the lesson with the compare and contrast skill on pages 328-330.  Introduce the vocabulary to the new story using context clues to understand multiple meaning words.

Students will listen to the Audio CD for the selection, “Yangs’ First Thanksgiving.” Students will follow along (pages 330-347) in textbook. 

 

EVALUATION:  Students will complete the contrast/compare skill workbook page 153, and vocabulary words on workbook page 154.  Students will write extended – response questions on page 348 about the story.
