Solar Energy Comes to Franklin Jr./Sr. High

Dedication of the Solar Panels

The Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation announced a new grant program to make children aware of how sunlight may be converted to electricity through solar photovoltaic systems last January. Franklin CUSD #1 won a $10,000 grant to install 1KW solar panels at the high school building. The district is expected to match 10% of the grant. According to Superintendent Roberts, "We had a special opportunity to trade in some electric lights, left over from an energy conservation grant we did a year or two ago, to make up the 10% match and the $10,000 worth of panels were installed on Oct. 1."

Mrs. Linda Cline has developed an extensive unit on solar energy to be taught in Junior High Science. Pictured below are pictures of the ribbon cutting and students working on the solar cars curriculum.

Anyone with internet acess will eventually be able to go on line 24/7 and see how much energy is being produced on the solar panels and how much pollution is being avoided.
